The Stabilisation Grid System
A stabilisation grid transforms loose gravel into a firm, structured surface that holds its shape under vehicle loads and resists displacement permanently.
A heavy-duty non-woven geotextile is laid directly over the compacted sub-base. This prevents fine soil migrating upward into the gravel, maintains drainage performance and suppresses weed growth from below.
Heavy-duty cellular grid panels are clicked together and pinned over the membrane. Each cell is approximately 40mm deep and locks the gravel in place, distributing vehicle load across the surface and preventing rutting or sinking.
14–20mm angular stone is compacted into the grid cells. The angular edges interlock under load — unlike rounded pea shingle which rolls freely. The result is a firm, stable surface that looks natural but performs like a hard standing.

Excavation to Structural Depth
Excavation to 250–400mm depending on ground conditions and vehicle loading. All unsuitable material removed — no shortcuts at this critical stage.
Geotextile Separation Membrane
Heavy-duty non-woven geotextile installed to prevent soil migration, maintain drainage performance, reduce weed penetration and protect the sub-base.
Compacted Structural Sub-Base
MOT Type 1 for standard load-bearing or MOT Type 3 open-graded aggregate for full permeability — laid in layers and mechanically compacted throughout.
Engineered Edge Restraints
Concrete kerbs, brick or block edging, steel edging or natural stone borders — all bedded securely and haunched to prevent lateral gravel movement.
Stabilisation Grid Installation
Heavy-duty interlocking cellular grid panels installed over the sub-base to lock gravel in place, prevent rutting, improve accessibility and reduce maintenance.
Angular Decorative Gravel
14–20mm angular stone or heavier natural aggregates installed to the correct depth. Angular gravel interlocks under vehicle load — we avoid rounded pea shingle.
